Yes I live in Berlin, Germany but I am not German. I am actually Canadian with a British dual citizenship. Though truthfully I do not feel a strong sense of national identity.

English is my first language and I have been studying German for the past 10 months, living in Berlin for the past 2.5 years.

Why Berlin? That is a good question and one that I am not sure that I can answer right now so I won’t.

But I do have some good friends here and live in a really beautiful, big (high ceilings!!) apartment in Schöneberg, 5 mins. away from Rathaus Schöneberg where JFK gave his famous “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech.

A Short Bio.

I was born in 1958 in Malvern, England. My father, a research physicist, took a job a couple of years later, after the birth of my second sister, at Bell Labs in New Jersey, USA.

This is where is grew up. In 1970 he took a job as a professor at the University of Toronto and moved the family to that Canadian city.

By my middle teen years I had started to rebel pretty strongly. I left school early, at 17, and set out to travel first Canada and then the world. I had many adventures (and misadventures) over the next few years some of which I am now writing about in fictional form.

I was a bit of a drifter and in my 20’s I drifted into hotel/restaurant work. For almost ten years I did just about everything you can do in that industry, from dishwashing to waiting tables to managing a small restaurant.

But I was not so happy and by the time I reached 30 I was involved in an unhappy relationship with a woman who insisted I do therapy if we were to continue to see each other.

I did the therapy and broke up with the woman…

From here I returned to school to study something called “Marine Technology”. It was fun, basically learning about boats.
By the time I had finished I was also finished with my interest in boats (at least as a career option) but I did decide to move out to the west coast of Canada and took up residence in Vancouver, BC when I was 33 years old.
